Alexander Delaney is a foundation doctor from the North West of England. After completing his undergraduate studies at Keele University School of Medicine he undertook a Master of Philosophy degree in neural tissue engineering focusing on therapeutic cell delivery for CNS injuries, and has published on the subject of spinal cord regeneration and nanoengineering protocols for augmentation of therapeutic target cell population. He will go on to undertake specialty training in ophthalmology and hopes to incorporate his previous work in neuro-engineering in to his career as an ophthalmic surgeon.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) occurs predominantly adults, and the true incidence in the paediatric population is unknown. Further, the differences in clinical features a lack of robust diagnostic criteria between adult and paediatric sub-populations can make diagnosis in peri-pubescent children more challenging. The authors present two cases of IIH occurring in twelve-year-old homozygotic female twins simultaneously. Patients were referred following incidental findings of papilloedema on routine eye examination. Each reported a history of intermittent visual disturbance and headaches. Both patients were found to have raised optic disc margins and increased lumbar puncture opening pressures with normal CSF composition. Both cases demonstrated good response to acetazolamide with resolution of symptoms within 3 months

Dr Katerina Vyhnalkova completed her undergraduate medical studies at Masaryk University School of Medicine in Brno, Czech Republic in 2017. During this time she undertook training in paediatric LASIK and strabismus preocdures at The Children’s Hospital Department of Ophthalmology, Brno. She is a junior doctor in the North West of the UK where she continues to develop a research profile through collaboration with the Whiston Hospital Department of Ophthalmology, UK, and will continue her training in paediatric ophthalmic surgery in the UK and abroad.
