Retinal Diseases prevalence in Europe

As per a survey of EURETINA, about 34 million population in the EU region and 22 million in the most populous countries of Europe (UK, Italy, France, Germany, Italy & Spain) are affected with AMD. As per the estimation, the number of Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affected people will grow up to more 25% by 2050. This growth shows a tremendous market potential in the above regions.   

In case of Diabetic Eye Disease (diabetic retinopathy), the current & future trend is same. It is estimated that above 25% of Diabetes patients are affected by DED which is almost equal to 4 million in the Europe. Around 1 million people from this group requires treatment of DED or clinically proven macular oedema. This number is going to increase further due to prevalence or Diabetes and related health disorders. It is observed that UK has the highest (83%) of DED patients and Italy has the lowest (11%).  

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Europe

It is estimated that about 26.3% of European citizen aged 60 or above are affected by AMD (early, intermediate or late AMD). Among all AMDs affected patients 24.1% are intermediate AMD and 2.2% are of any late AMD. Late AMD is again subdivided into neovascular AMD (nAMD) and geographic atrophy (GA) form. Data shows Italy is having highest prevalence (52.2%) of AMD followed by UK (43.6%) & Spain (26.4%). Among the major European countries, prevalence of AMD is lower in France.

As per the calculation, about 33.6 million of individuals aged 60 or above are affected by AMD. About 2.8 million are with any late AMD, 1.7million with nAMD and above 5.8million people are affected with any kinds of AMD.

As per the estimation in age group 55-84, it is predicted that, more than 25 million people will be affected with AMD by 2050. The over all growth will be at a rate of 20% in coming 35 years. It is also found that the growth will be major in the age group of 75 or old with an increase of 67% (4.3million to 7.2million).

While analysing by countries, it is observed that till 2040 the growth of affected individual will be parallel with recent trend and only growth after 2040 is observed in UK. The decrease population is expected in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
